Hardware wallets for iPhone

These hardware wallets let you prepare a transaction on your iPhone and approve it with the wallet. Choose by the connection, what you need to carry and support for your crypto. If your iPhone is your only computer, read “Will you also need a computer?” before choosing.

What matters on iPhone.

Sending from your iPhone, not just viewing a balance

A phone app can show a wallet’s balance even when it cannot use that device to approve a payment. For example, BitBox02 Nova works with BitBoxApp on iPhone; the original BitBox02 needs USB on a computer or Android phone. Nova still needs power: plug it into the iPhone’s USB-C port, use the appropriate adapter, or connect it to a power-only source such as a power bank. Bluetooth carries the data.

Manufacturer example: Nova takes power from the iPhone here. BitBoxApp exchanges data with the device over Bluetooth.

Which connection suits you?

The connection changes what you do each time you send. These examples show the main differences.

Bluetooth with a rechargeable battery

Bluetooth
Charge beforehand

Once charged, the wallet needs no cable during approval. You read the transaction details on its screen.

Bluetooth, with power still connected

Bluetooth
Keep connected to power

Bluetooth carries the data, but this wallet has no battery. Keep it plugged into the iPhone or another suitable power source while using it. USB power does not replace Bluetooth.

NFC: hold the card to your phone

Hold the card to the iPhone when the app requests a scan. The card needs no charging and has no screen, so you review payment details on the phone. Your iPhone must support the required NFC functions.

With multi-coin firmware, you exchange QR codes between the wallet and the iPhone app and check the transaction on the wallet’s screen. No Bluetooth data link is needed, but the wallet still needs charging.

Check support in the iPhone app you’ll use

A wallet’s overall coin list may include assets that need a different app or a computer. You need support for your coin or token and its network in the iPhone app paired with the device. With BitBox02 Nova, Ethereum also requires the Multi edition; the Bitcoin-only edition cannot be converted.

Will you also need a computer?

For routine setup and firmware updates with an iPhone, start with BitBox02 Nova Multi or Ledger Flex. Safe 7 supports iPhone setup and signing, but we cannot confirm it as a phone-only maintenance choice. Here is what each route involves.

BitBox02 Nova Multi: BitBoxApp requires iOS 16 or later. Its iPhone setup includes installing firmware, creating the wallet and saving a backup to the microSD card in Nova. Keep that card separately from the device. Later firmware updates are offered through BitBoxApp after you connect and unlock Nova.

Ledger Flex: Ledger Wallet currently requires iOS 15.1 or later. You can set up Flex over Bluetooth and write down the recovery words shown on its screen. Ordinary Ledger OS updates also work through the mobile app over Bluetooth. Keep your backup available before updating. If Flex gets stuck in Update Mode, Ledger’s documented fallback uses a computer.

Trezor Safe 7 Universal: the current Trezor Suite app requires iOS 16.4 or later. Its iPhone Bluetooth setup includes initial firmware installation and writing down the backup words shown on Safe 7. However, Trezor’s firmware-update guide still directs iOS users to a computer. Initial installation does not establish the later update route, so do not choose Safe 7 on the assumption that an iPhone alone covers maintenance.

Two conditions to check on the alternatives

Tangem Wallet needs full NFC support for creating its backup as well as a phone that can run the current app, which requires iOS 16.4 or later. Do not buy it for an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: those phones cannot run the required iOS version, and Tangem also identifies them as unable to create the backup.

Keystone 3 Pro’s documented firmware-update methods use a computer, either over USB or to prepare a microSD card. Being able to sign through QR codes with an iPhone does not remove that maintenance requirement.

Make your shortlist

First rule out a setup or update route you cannot use. Then confirm your coin or token, its network and the iPhone app using the asset-check guide. Keep only the exact editions that fit those requirements, then weigh what you need to carry and how you would recover after losing the device.
