OUR COMPARISON METHOD
How we choose and compare wallets
We first check which wallets can sign transactions with your device and cryptocurrencies. Our recommendations then explain which option we would choose and why. A compatibility match alone is not a recommendation or a security rating.
How we choose our starting points
Among compatible wallets, our picks reflect the controls, power needs, companion app and backup options you would use. Each recommendation explains its reason and when another model would fit better. We use four starting profiles:
General use
Our starting choices are Trezor Safe 5, Ledger Flex and BitBox02 Nova. They offer different controls and backup arrangements to compare for everyday use.
Safe 5 offers a colour touchscreen with Trezor Suite, its companion app, over USB with a computer or compatible Android phone; USB also powers it. Flex offers an E Ink touchscreen with Ledger Wallet. Nova uses BitBoxApp, touch controls along its edges and a backup for restoring the wallet, stored on a microSD memory card.
Phone use
Our starting choices are BitBox02 Nova, Ledger Flex and Trezor Safe 7. For phone use, check how the wallet connects and gets power, and whether you also need a computer for later updates.
Nova uses Bluetooth with an iPhone but still needs USB power; Android requires USB OTG, which lets the phone connect to and power the wallet. BitBoxApp on iPhone also guides compatible Nova firmware updates when offered. Flex and Safe 7 must be charged for wireless use over Bluetooth. Safe 7 offers a colour touchscreen with Trezor Suite.
Bitcoin-only use
Our starting choices are the Bitcoin-only versions of BitBox02 Nova, Trezor Safe 3 and Trezor Safe 5. These editions or firmware limit the wallet to Bitcoin; that is a usage choice, not an assumed security advantage.
Safe 3 adds physical buttons as an alternative to Safe 5’s colour touchscreen. Both use Trezor Suite and USB with a computer or compatible Android phone.
Bitcoin-only use with a phone
Our starting choices are BitBox02 Nova Bitcoin-only and Trezor Safe 7 Bitcoin-only. This profile combines Bitcoin-only scope with the connection and power requirements of phone use. It has two starting choices; other compatible models remain in the catalog.
Nova offers the microSD recovery backup and needs USB power with iPhone Bluetooth, or USB OTG with Android. BitBoxApp on iPhone also guides compatible Nova firmware updates when offered. Safe 7 offers a colour touchscreen with Trezor Suite and must be charged for Bluetooth use.
How the catalog orders the results
The catalog’s “Default order” puts starting choices that match your active filters first, followed by other matching models alphabetically. “By name” sorts the entire matching list alphabetically. We do not add a substitute simply to fill a missing place in the shortlist.
Browse crypto walletsWhat a compatibility match tells you
A match covers documented signing support—authorizing a transaction—for the exact model and edition, your device, desktop operating system where relevant, app, connection and selected cryptocurrency. If you select several cryptocurrencies, the same documented combination of device, app and connection must support them all.
Setup, receiving, updates and recovery are separate tasks. Check the product’s workflow conditions and manufacturer instructions for the app, asset and network you use. An app-store listing alone does not establish signing support, and a filter match does not promise every operation in every app.
What our research establishes
We research manufacturer documentation and list the sources on product and guide pages. Firsthand observations, when available, are identified separately with their scope. We flag missing or conflicting information. We have not independently audited device security.
A product or article’s review date records when we checked its information. Firmware, apps, supported networks, availability and terms can change afterwards. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for setup or other device tasks, and the official store’s current terms before ordering.
